Nota Informativa
ambiente, educación, salud y derechos humanos, proporcionanado
www.unhchr.org.

Note Informative

Information Note
The Secretariat for the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
is now
established at the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
Mr.
Nitin Desai, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social
Affairs, has
established the Secretariat within the Division for Social
Policy and
Development. This provides a solid foundation on which to grow
this
important work.
The Secretariat's job is to assist the Permanent Forum on
Indigenous
Issues in carrying out its mandate, which covers the areas of
economic and
social development, culture, the environment, education, health and
human
rights, through the provision of expert advice and
recommendations on
indigenous issues to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as well
as to
programmes, funds and agencies of the United Nations; raising
awareness and
promoting integration and coordination of activities relating to
indigenous
issues within the United Nations system; and preparing and
disseminating
information on indigenous issues. The Secretariat is now located
within
DESA in our offices on the 17th floor, 2 United Nations Plaza,
busily
establishing office systems, our webpage and communication
networks and
preparing for the second session of the Permanent Forum (12-23 May
2003).
The report of the Permanent Forum is available through the
webpage of
the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights at
www.unhchr.org. If
you do not have internet access and require a hard copy please
contact the
Secretariat and a copy will be mailed to you.
We would also like to request your input for a calendar
of all
indigenous relevant conferences and events in 2003-2004.
Information on accreditation for the second session of the
Permanent
Forum will be available by mid-February on the website we
are now
preparing. We are committed to doing our best to ensure a
successful
second session of the Permanent Forum. We look forward to
establishing
regular lines of communication with our most important IPO
and NGO
colleagues.
