RESOLUTION ON THE OIL SPILL AT LAKE WABAMUN
IN
SUPPORT OF PAUL FIRST NATION
Whereas
on Wednesday, August 3, 2005, a CN Railroad derailed at Lake Wabamun,
Alberta, on the traditional lands and territories of Nakota/Cree
Peoples of the Paul First Nation, Confederacy of Treaty 6 First
Nations, spilling thousands of litres of oil into the water,
affecting severely the wildlife of the area, particularly the fish
and birdlife; the health and wellbeing of the Indigenous Peoples and
their human rights, including their individual and collective right
to food and food sovereignty, their right health and their right as
Peoples to their means of subsistence and a clean and safe
environment;
Whereas
the Nakota/Cree Peoples have created a blockade of the railroad, to
ensure that this violation of their rights is remedied and that an
immediate and thorough cleanup and restoration of their rights and
the well-being of our Mother Earth take place:
Be it
resolved, that the International Indian Treaty Council in assembly
at Ermineskin Cree Nation on August 7, 2005 expresses its solidarity
and supports and encourages all efforts of these First Nations
Peoples to restore completely the natural balance and health of
their lands and territories, and of their Peoples.
The
International Indian Treaty Council will inform appropriate
International bodies of this desecration of our Mother Earth, and
this violation of the collective and individual rights of the Paul
First Nation.
